Implementation of the Waterfront Plan will require the boat launch to be relocated. The City is in process of reviewing possible boat launch sites, but a final location has not been determined.

1. Can I park overnight on the street or in a lot?

Legally parked cars may park overnight on city streets from March 1st to November 29th. The winter parking ordinance restricting street parking is effective from December 1st to February 28th.

Parking overnight in one of the five municipal lots downtown require either police permission or a monthly permit. Permits are available from the Police Department office during normal business hours.

A one-night tavern overnight municipal lot parking permit is available from a downtown tavern. More information here

2. Can I pay my parking ticket online?

Parking ticket payments are not available online. Remit your city parking ticket payment in person, by phone or by utility drop box outside the police department entrance. Municipal court citations are paid to Lake Country Municipal Court located at the Oconomowoc Police Department, 630 E. Wisconsin Avenue. Their online vendor for processing credit card transactions is KeepSafeSolutions.

1. What should I do if my sewer backs up?

The first thing to do is call a plumber. Most blockages are found to be in the lateral which is the owner’s responsibility to have cleaned and repaired if necessary. The owner is responsible for the lateral from their house to the main in the street. If the plumber finds the blockage is in the sewer main, your plumber should contact us at (262) 569-2192 during the hours of 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday so we can check the sewer main. If you need assistance after regular business hours, you may contact us by calling the Police Dispatch Center at (262) 567-4401.

2. Do you accept waste from RV’s?

Yes we do between the hours of 7:30 a.m. – 2:50 p.m. weekdays. The cost is $5.00.

3. Where does the wastewater come from?

It comes from toilets, household cleaning, bathing and cooking, as well as industrial cleaning and manufacturing. There is also some from other sources such as rainwater. We especially see a large increase during heavy thunderstorms or when snow is melting.

4. What happens to the wastewater after you treat it?

The clean water leaving the plant is discharged to the Oconomowoc River.

5. How clean is the treated wastewater?

The Oconomowoc Wastewater Treatment Facility is an advanced secondary treatment facility. As such, the water we discharge is comparable to the quality of natural surface waters, and is safe for fish and other aquatic life. Both the effluent and the receiving waters are monitored to make sure the standards are met.

6. Do you give tours of the wastewater plant?

Yes we do and there is no charge. For safety reasons, minimum age for school groups is 5th grade. Call (262) 569-2192 for details and to set up a tour.

7. How much wastewater does Oconomowoc Wastewater Treatment Facility treat in a day?

About 2.4 million gallons per day; or the volume required to fill 3.6 Olympic sized swimming pools.

3. I have colored paint marks in my yard, what does that mean?

Utilities use colored paint to mark locations of different things. Each color represents something different. Red is Electric, Blue is Water, Green is Sanitary Sewer, Yellow is Gas and Orange is Communication.  Oconomowoc Utilities will only mark the red, blue and green.  The other colors are managed by different utilities such as WE Energies and Spectrum Communications.

1. What Is a Cross Connection Control Program?

This is a combined cooperative effort between plumbing and health officials, municipalities, and property owners to establish and administer guidelines for controlling cross connections and ensure their enforcement so that the public drinking water supply is protected both in the city water distribution system and within buildings to the point of use. Our program consists of the following components: Public Education Program- We keep you informed with publication and meetings. For more information visit Cross Connection Survey- All industrial, commercial, and institutional facilities' plumbing systems will be inspected to determine if cross connections exist. Installation of Protective Devices- Backflow prevention devices or assemblies will need to be installed where known unprotected cross connections exist. Annual Testing- All backflow prevention assemblies will be tested once a year by certified testers.

2. What is a Cross Connection?

A cross connection is a direct of potential connection between any part of the public water supply system and a source of contamination or pollution. The most common form of cross connection is a garden hose, which is easily connected to the public water supply system and can be used to apply a variety of potentially dangerous substances, including chemicals and fertilizer. Other common cross connections include dishwashers, toilets, pressure washers, boilers, pools, and lawn sprinkler systems.

3. How Does Contamination Occur?

Water Normally flows in one direction, from the public water system through the customer's cold or hot water plumbing system to a faucet or other plumbing fixture. Under certain conditions, water can flow in the reverse direction. This is known as backflow, and it occurs when back-siphonage or backpressure is created in a water line.

Back-siphonage may occur when there is a drop in the supply pressure of the water distribution system. This can be caused by a water line break, water main repair, or during a rapid withdrawal of water from a fire hydrant. This creates a vacuum, which may pull or siphon contaminants or pollutants into the drinking water supply.

Backpressure may be created when a source of pressure, such as a pump, boiler, or other building creates a pressure greater than that supplied from the water distribution system; this may force water to reverse direction.

4. What is a Cross Connection Survey ?

Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Regulations (NR 811.09) recommends that all industrial, commercial, and institutional facilities be surveyed for cross connections regularly (every two to six years depending on the degree of hazard within the facility).

The survey is a walk-through of the water-system piping in a building or property, starting at the water meter and ending at the last free-flowing tap. Survey time varies depending upon the facility being surveyed. Large, complex facilities will be required to prove that they have an internal program to protect the potable water system. At the end of the survey HDI will produce a report describing any violations of discrepancies found, as well as a time frame for compliance.

Surveys of existing facilities will be scheduled based on the degree of hazard that they present to the water system. The first round of inspections will include city-owned buildings, public school facilities, hospitals/medical facilities, car washes, industrial/manufacturing facilities, and mortuaries. Inspections notices will be mailed to water customers approximately two weeks before the scheduled inspection date. A building representative should be available during the inspections to answer questions and provide access to areas within the facility.
