This 8 on 8 small field modified tackle football league is a safer way for young athletes to play tackle football while focusing on the fundamentals of football and better preparing them for full-on 11 on 11 tackle football in 7th grade. (5th and 6th grade flag football will only be offered in the spring. For information or to register for flag football, contact the YMCA at Pabst Farms 262-567-7251.)
5th and 6th grade teams will play 8 player football with modified rules which include playing on a 40 yard field, coaches being allowed to be on the field to coach during the games, no special teams and the players will be playing against players of similar size and ability. We feel that this is a great way to introduce tackle football to 5th and 6th graders in a safer manner than traditional tackle football.
Practices and home games will be held at Oconomowoc High School and the program will begin in early August (date TBD by the league). The teams will play and seven (7) game schedule as part of the Classic Youth Football League. Away games will be played against other teams in the CYFL in southeast Wisconsin. Parents will need to provide transportation to and from all practices and games. Games will be played on Saturdays starting in August and going through October.
Football practices will start at the beginning of August with the first week of conditioning running Monday through Friday from 5:30pm – 7:30pm.
Practice will begin the following week and will take place Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30pm – 7:30pm at the High School.
There are no tryouts and teams will be drafted into equal teams facilitated by the Gridiron Club and High School in August.
The Oconomowoc Recreation Department, Gridiron Club and High School will supply all equipment necessary to participate in the football program with the exception of: a mouthguard, cleats, padded girdle (7 - pad girdle is preferred), volleyball style knee pads, receivers gloves (optional) and undershirts (optional).
